Overview

Why visit the Atlas Mountains, Morocco

In the Atlas Mountains, Morocco has its highest peaks: the High Atlas rises just south of Marrakech, and the village of Imlil (1,740 m) is the gateway to Jebel Toubkal, which at 4,167 m is the highest peak in North Africa. Terraced fields, walnut trees and Amazigh (Berber) villages make it one of Morocco’s most beautiful regions. The area was hit by the September 2023 earthquake and is rebuilding, so local guides and village guesthouses are where your money helps most. Treks range from easy half day village walks to the two day climb of Toubkal. Spring and autumn are best for hiking, and nights are cold even in summer.
